The main reason most people at least visit Kaikoura is the whales. Kaikoura offers a unique situation to see whales up close. They come so close into shore here because of the continental shelf come pretty close in shore. This brings all sorts of wildlife in close to shore, Sperm whales, Dolphin and Orcas are common sights.

In Maoro legend Kaikoura was the seat for the god Maui, that as the legend goes fished the North Island out of the water.
It was Christmas 1987 was the first commercial whale watching charters began, very quickly the tours became world famous and Kaikoura was put on the international tourist map.
